My Story

This is the story about a boy who’s fear for horses was replaced by the fear of God through a supernatural event that made him a follower of God and fulfilling his lifelong dream of working with horses.

I was born, 4 August 1973 in Otjiwarongo Namibia (Then South-West Africa). My Dad rode donkeys as a child to his small farm school in De Rust in the Klein Karoo, but I can’t recall that he ever rode horses. My Mother also never rode horses, yet my great grandfather, on my mother’s side was a Blacksmith (Farrier).

My first memory of horseback riding started at the young age of 5 years old, when I was led on a black farm horse by my Dad’s Uncle (Oom Albertein Snyman) on the family Farm at De Rust. And then another two times in Karasburg, once at a show and then on a black and white horse (Piebald), one of my fondest childhood memories. Out in the veld on Oom Buys van Blerk’s Farm outside of Karasburg, a farm worker was leading me on a horse, I was approximately 7 or 8 years old at the time.

We moved to South Africa, Saldanha Bay Military Academy at the end of 1983 who was home to the Saldanha Bay Military Equestrian Centre. At the age of 9yrs my mom took my brothers, sister and I to go horseback riding at the Centre. This day almost altered the course of my life forever away from what I believe God (Yah) intended my life to be.

I remember the riding instructor(corporal) asking me: ’Can you ride?’ to which I responded:’ Yes, I have ridden’ He assumed that I have ridden independently, and I implied that I have been on a horse, led by someone. So, he put me on a roan called Geronimo and when I passed the instructor whilst riding the horse, he flicked the horse with a stone on its bumb. The horse overreacted and took off like a rocket, flat speed with me on its back.

Clinging for dear life for one and a half laps, not knowing how to steer or stop this powerful frantic animal! I lost my grasp and fell off at the back of the horse at top speed, landing awkwardly on my neck. From there I can’t remember the rest of the events that day.

That was the end of my horse-riding pursuit. I was so fearful of horses from that day on, any mention of horses would send me into a cold sweat, shaking uncontrollably! I wanted NOTHING to do with horses!

At the age of 11yrs Constant Neethling became my best friend, and they had horses on the coast of Saldanha Bay, Swart Riet. On weekends we would go to their farm but being too scared, I would never ride. This never changed, until one day I accompanied my mother, who went to bake pancakes at the ‘Boere Sport’ Day at the Military Academy. I was mesmerised watching people riding on horseback as if the horses were their own feet and how they laughed and enjoyed themselves playing Boere Sport.

Something happened inside of me that day. I was deeply moved, like a burning sensation. I just had this urge to ride. So that Monday I clocked in at the Military Academy Equestrian Centre and I started riding and have been riding ever since. I just decided whatever it will take to ride a horse, I would do. Because I had the desire to, and I wanted to understand a horse. Within 6 months I backed my first horse. An Anglo Arib called Russian Spy.

I started playing Gymkhana and I started doing Dressage and a bit of show jumping. We were brought up in all the horse sports and the later during my high school career Polo X came to the Club so naturally I started with Polo X. On holidays my brothers and I would ride horse from morning till night, riding horse on the beach and swimming in the sea and have all sorts of fun on horseback. I joined the Military directly after completion of high school at Oudtshoorn Infantry Base where I was commissioned as an Officer and was deployed to Berede Centre at Potchefstroom. I had the privilege to receive Military Horsemanship Training as well as Motorbike Deployment Training. We did our deployments with horses, trackers, dogs and bikes.

After Military service I started my studying (1994-1995) Equine Studies in Pretoria which I loved. I went to Namibia to study The Wild Horses behaviour roaming free in the desert. But you don’t have to travel to other countries to observe horse behaviour. If you pay attention, you can learn a lot by observing horses in your own back yard. Horses work with pressure levels, they warn first and if another horse don’t react in submission they kick or bite in response, that’s their natural behaviour. Due to financial constraints I had to drop out of my studies, even though I was at the top of my class, it was heart breaking!

I found a job in Racing at Randjiesfontein and was treated as an outsider probably because I looked like a ‘Plaas Japie’ walking around in shorts and bare feet. It didn’t take long for me to start wearing shoes though.

I was introduced to a man who ended up inviting me to go to Australia on 14 June 1997. I landed at 5 o’clock and started working my first horse at 8 o’clock. Here I got a lot of experience, and I met a man called Len Tailor who guided me into being a better horseman. The one thing he taught me that stuck was, to switch a horse ON and Off. In other words, how to get them to work hard and fast and how to switch off after that to come back to a calm state. Our roads departed after about 8 months where I ended up working for lots of other people breaking in horses and fixing problem horses. I did tons of horses.

Subsequently, someone approached me to go to Dubai, I worked with a horse for Sheikh Mohammad which he bought for $500 000, and the horse put a few people in hospital. After 9 months they got me to come and work with this horse who everybody was afraid of. After I fixed the problem word spread and a man from Japan saw me and invited me to go to Japan to help with a stallion, they bought for $10 000 000, who took somebodies 4 fingers off and put another 4 guys in hospital. I fixed the stallion, loved Japan! That concluded my overseas travels.

Back in South Africa I was privileged to do an American Accredited Equine Dentistry Course in Cape Town. The only time they came to SA! In Nov 2004 I got my accreditation as an Equine Dentist. From here I continued working with horses as an Equine Dentist.

The BIGEST lifechanging event that happened to me occurred in 2009. A supernatural event changed my life forever, where I went through a herd of cattle with my bakkie without being toughed or injured. I was driving at high speed, and I heard a voice afterwards, it could have been my own because I repeated it: ’An Angel saved my life’ I went through a herd of cattle on a rainy night that was on the road and on the side of the road and from that event I started following Christ. I need to emphasize; this was the biggest event in my life!

This is where the following verse started to become a reality for me:

Proverbs 1:7

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

I started to commit everything in my life to follow Christ. I started to get more information and started to do things better and faster than other people giving glory to God in everything I do. I honestly honour God for this gift. He has often given me dreams and ideas and visions. I know now that knowledge is from Him and not earthly people. It is because of God that I am skilled with horses. And all the success I have had is due to Him and me following and fearing Him is my reasonable sacrifice.

I live in the North-West Province in South Africa along with my loving wife Charmaine and our 4 Godfearing, horse loving enthusiastic children. Still loving the classic movie: ‘A man from Snowy River’ and loving the wonderful horses God has created for us to enjoy being filled with the deepest gratitude for His mercy and for all the friends we have made and are still making on our trails.

I hope you liked reading my story!
